What is a Casino?

A casino, or kasino in French, is a place where people can gamble. It is also a social gathering place. Casinos offer a variety of games like poker, roulette, blackjack and craps. Some of them also have theatres and restaurants. They can be found in many different cities all over the world.

Although gambling likely predates recorded history (primitive protodice and carved six-sided dice have been found), the modern casino as a single place offering a variety of ways to gamble under one roof developed in the 16th century, during a period when a gambling craze swept Europe. Wealthy Italian aristocrats would hold private parties in venues known as ridotti, where they could indulge in their favorite pastime without risk of the Inquisition.

Because large amounts of money are handled within casinos, security measures are necessary. Staffers watch patrons closely, looking for blatant cheating at card and table games or signs of stealing. Elaborate surveillance systems provide an “eye-in-the-sky” view of the entire casino, with cameras in every window and doorway that can be adjusted to focus on specific suspects.

In addition to security, casinos must entice customers to gamble with their offers of perks like free food and drinks. They do this by displaying ads on their floors, in their windows, and over the sound system. They also give away complimentary items to players, known as comps. For major bettors, this can include a suite, free spectacular entertainment tickets and reduced-fare transportation.
