Poker is a gambling game played by a group of people around a table. The main goal is to create the highest poker hand possible. Players may bluff their way to victory, but must be careful with the amount they bet.
Generally, the minimum ante is $1 or $5. Usually, the player making the first bet is responsible for all the chips in the pot.
Before the cards are dealt, the dealer assigns the values of the chips. Typically, the lowest valued chip is a white or blue chip. For example, a red chip is worth five whites, and a blue chip is worth two, four or five reds.
Once the cards are dealt, players can choose to fold, raise, check or call. If they call, they must match the bet, but they can also decline to do so.
Some poker games are played with a wild card, which takes any suit. Others use jokers. Other poker variations use a standard 52-card deck.
The dealer cuts a number of cards from the deck. These cards are then passed out to players one at a time. Each player then has the opportunity to shuffle and discard up to three cards.
In some poker variants, the player with the best hand wins the pot. When there are ties, the high card breaks them.
Another betting round is then performed. After each new round of cards are dealt, a player can either bet or fold.
